Client Emails – Maxtor Hard Disk Recovery Issues

My one year only Acer Aspire notebook began to be very sluggish last night. Though it did not crash, it was really running super slow so I contacted tech support to give me a hand. The tech guy on the other line told me to run hard drive diagnostics before searching for possible malware or spyware. After I ran chkdsk and hardware scans, the hard drive failed and returned with a Return Code 7. I am not an expert so I don’t know what that means. I told the tech guy about this but all he said is that he is sorry that the diagnostic didn’t work out and that they will just be sending me with a brand new hard drive. Thing is, is there a way that could first get the data I stored in my old hard drive? I don’t have backups for those so I need the data recovered.

Help, I would appreciate any advice on this. So, I have a Maxtor external hard drive for about a couple of months now. I use it on my Windows 7 PC on a Dell computer. Everything is working flawlessly until one day when I opened my computer with the hard drive plugged in already that the computer didn’t detect it. A warning message is simply shown saying that I need to reformat the hard drive in order to use it properly, which I don’t want to do since I have important documents saved on it. In some cases, it just says that I need to scan for errors, which I do but is unsuccessful in finding any problems. I also check for possible bad sectors but I haven’t found any. Whenever I try to safely remove it with the computer open, it says that I can’t because it is still in use even if I am not really using it. I make sure of this but still I cannot safely remove it. In other cases that the drive shows on my computer, I click on it but it says the drive is not accessible because of corrupted files. When I checked its properties, it says it is RAW though I am sure it was NTFS before?
