Ticking on power-up, a card the camera insists needs formatting, a pen drive snapped at its connector, an array that dropped a member and won't rebuild, a Mac stuck on the flashing folder. Hardware issues are responsible for almost all such problems, whether in Nottingham or somewhere else, and the data is still on the hardware. The engineer diagnoses the problem free of cost. Thereafter there is only one price agreed in writing to recover the data from your device, and this price stays fixed: £250 + VAT for cards and sticks, £300 + VAT for an individual drive, then £500 + VAT upwards for multiple drives. In most cases you only pay if we recover your data.

A matched donor had given up its read/write heads. On each side of the scratched strip were clean surfaces. Those clean surfaces were imaged first, and so it was possible to reconstruct the photo library from that image rather than directly from the disk.
At two red lights, the unit was still fully recoverable. The damage came when a rebuild was started after that, overwriting the metadata the NAS keeps for itself. Recovery needed a full copy of each disk, weak sectors included, and then the mirror was reassembled block by block from whichever disk still read each block cleanly. Every share opened just as it had before.
A 512GB SanDisk appeared empty first thing in the morning; by the end of the job, all the pictures were back. Nothing was written to the card. An exact duplicate was made from it, and every attempt after that ran against the duplicate. Rebuilding the file system recovered most of the files, and a deep carve pulled out the photos whose directory entries had gone. The customer stayed with the photographer.
A write blocker went on before anything else, and the recorder's disk was copied. The proprietary video format was then decoded and matched to the time codes, which allowed the hour the insurer had asked for to be returned as a file on its own.
Insurance claims & court files
Most work is complete once the files are returned. Some of it is not; jobs that don't end with the return of files include tribunals, insurance claims and disputes between employers and former employees. This type of work begins its evidence handling at the parcel: write blockers used on all copies, hash values checked for each copy, an exhibit reference created, each step recorded as it occurs, and any unreadable data documented together with the reason why it was unreadable.
Imaging must take place before any analysis of the device can be conducted (machines, hard drives and memory cards alike), and then analysis is performed on the image, which is also documented as it takes place. CPR Part 35 applies to civil reports. We have no ISO 17025 and no UKAS accreditation. Page one of every report states that fact in black and white, which is more than many laboratories state in writing at all. Solicitors, insurers, employers and private individuals instruct us. Our work starts at £800 + VAT, and only a person entitled to have the device examined may instruct it.
The footage could be missing from your menu, or stuck inside a recorder that has stopped working. The fight is with the machine overwriting itself, and how quickly it does that depends on the model and how it was configured. Therefore, the quicker you call us the better. The indexing process is run using the disk's own time codes, then the window you want is exported. £400 + VAT covers recorder work.

Tracked, insured post to the intake lab, or drop it off there Monday to Friday, 9am to 5:30pm. There is no collection round and no physical location to visit in Nottingham, and whether the job succeeds or fails, the return trip is covered by us.
An engineer works at the bench to determine what part of the device has failed and how much of the media will actually read back. Approximately 48 hours should pass from when we receive a single disk. No fee is charged at this stage, and it is also possible to stop at this point without paying anything.
The findings and the figure are sent to you together, and no chargeable work begins until you have approved it.
Recovered data is returned to you on new media at our expense; most jobs take two to seven working days on the bench. Your case stays open until you confirm that you have opened every file and that everything is correct.
