The symptom · a drive nothing will show

Hard drive not detected, Nottingham. Nothing sees it, but nothing has wiped it.

Three questions in order will name the broken component. Does the BIOS list the drive? Does Disk Management? Does Explorer open it? Wherever it drops out of that sequence is your answer — electronics, firmware, or the volume — and your documents live in none of the three. Work the stages in order and the fault names itself.

Absent from the BIOSThe lowest of the three rungs. Electrical trouble, or firmware: broken tracks, a shorted diode, service-area modules that refuse to load. What sits on the platters is nearly always intact.
Listed in the BIOS, missing in Disk ManagementThe drive itself is answering properly, which puts the damage further up — in the partition table, or in the file system's own bookkeeping. Either of those is repaired against the copy, and your disk is not touched.

Repairing the board

Off comes the shorted TVS diode and on goes a fresh one. Where a board is past saving, a donor deputises for it — carrying your own ROM chip, since the adaptive values on it were taken from your own platters and suit nothing else.

The file list comes before the bill

The file list reaches you before any invoice does. Say yes and it is billed; say no and it is not — and on most jobs, if nothing comes back there is nothing to pay. Whatever comes off goes home on media bought in for your case, carriage at our end. Nothing here is closed until you have opened those files on your own machine.

What comes in most often

  • Every stage implicates a different component — some drives die before the BIOS sees them, some get into Disk Management and stop dead, some appear in Explorer and still refuse to mount. Establishing which of those you have is most of the diagnosis.
  • Failing is the TVS diode's job — deliberately shorting the rail, it absorbs the spike itself, and that is exactly why a drive which will not power up generally has platters in perfect order.
  • Matching model numbers prove nothing — calibration figures for a set of platters live in the ROM on that drive's own board, so a donor still carrying its factory chip is tuned to somebody else's disk.
  • Flash does the same thing in its own way — a stopped controller, or firmware that will not load, standing between you and NAND that has nothing whatever wrong with it. The everyday example is a WD Blue SA510 reporting 0MB. There is a separate page for SSDs.

Worth holding on to: an electronic or a firmware fault accounts for almost every drive that arrives invisible to its computer. Both exist to handle the introductions between a disk and a machine, and neither is where documents are kept. So an absent drive is reporting a hardware problem of its own, nothing more, and that is why this fault ends well more often than most. Finding out which of the two it is costs you nothing.

A blown TVS diode, and a WD that would not spin

Mains power failed overnight at a Newark farm office, and by morning the desktop showed one disk where there had been two. Silent WD, no entry in the BIOS, and the TVS diode on its board was the fault. Its own ROM went across to a donor PCB, and the full image was off within two days of the parcel arriving.

What helps, and what does damage.

  • A different cable, a different port, and then stop
  • Say whether the disk can be heard or felt turning
  • Mention a power cut, a spike or lightning
  • Leave it unopened and send it as found

What makes it harder

  • Clicking yes on the Initialize Disk box
  • Fitting a same-model PCB without transferring the ROM
  • Trying it in every machine in the house
  • Buying a donor board and soldering it on the kitchen table

Answers before you spend anything.

Dead silent — can the files still come off?

Usually, yes. A dead board gets repaired or exchanged, and whatever killed it seldom pushes past the electronics into the platters, or into the NAND behind them. As jobs go, a drive with no sign of life in it is among the more predictable ones.

Windows is offering to initialise it — yes or no?

Never. A blank partition map is what that box writes, laid straight across the one that records where everything is. Say no, take the drive out, and get an engineer onto it before anything else has a turn.

Nothing in the BIOS at all. Is it finished?

No. What a drive like that has mislaid is its way of introducing itself, not anything written onto it. The fault sits in the electronics, or in firmware kept in the service area. Neither of those places holds a single one of your files.

A power cut, and then nothing. Are the two related?

Very probably. A spike gets absorbed by a protection diode, which is fitted so that it shorts and dies before anything further back does. The electronics went; what you saved is still where you saved it.

Switched off, a drive cannot get any worse.

The look costs nothing. What comes back to you is a file list — what opened, what did not — plus one figure to finish the job, in writing, before anything chargeable begins. Most jobs carry no fee at all unless the data comes back. Leave the drive switched off until you have that list.
