How deep water and heat damage actually goes.

How far the water actually getsHardly ever the platters, which sit sealed away and read normally afterwards. It is the parts outside that seal which take it: the contact strip, the connector, the board — cleanable or replaceable, every one.
What heat actually damagesMostly the circuit board, and first of all. Platters survive temperatures that have already finished off plastics and solder. Off comes the dead board, on goes a donor, and across to it moves your own ROM chip.
Mains water, dirty water, saltThe mild case is a split mains pipe. Water that has run across a floor is worse, bringing silt and whatever else it gathered en route. Hardest of all is salt, whose chloride goes straight past the board and into the coating. Whichever grade it was, the drive should travel damp inside a sealed bag.
Soot causes a second problemSoot damages on the way down, leaving an abrasive, acidic film in every seam and vent. Turn a drive over in that condition and the grit is dragged across surfaces that should never be touched. Clean first, then, and let power wait its turn a long way back.

Damp is how we want it to turn up, and the bag opened here should still be wet when it is. Let it dry on the journey and everything the water was carrying crystallises onto the contacts instead. Heat and soot jobs travel a different way: untouched, soot and all.

What comes in most often

  • Weekends do not pause it — corrosion carries on through Saturday and through Sunday. Left on a worktop from Friday, a drive has three days of it behind it by Monday morning. Post it damp.
  • Double the bill for one hopeful power-up — the short kills off the board, and anything that gets through it arrives at the preamplifier in the head stack. On one side of that line is a wash and a replacement board. On the other is opening the drive and re-heading it.
  • Water comes in grades — the mildest sort arrives out of a split mains pipe. Water that has travelled across a floor brings silt with it, and whatever else it picked up. The grade that gets into the coating is salt. Post all three of them damp.
  • Heat works through in a useful order — solder and plastics go long before an alloy body does. Which turns the work into a shopping list: buy in whatever carries a price, and protect the one component that carries none.

Hardly any of this work is dramatic. A pipe splitting behind the kitchen units. A washing machine emptying its contents onto the floor at three in the morning. A storeroom radiator letting go over a closed weekend. A drive lifted out of a fire-damaged office and posted the same afternoon. Ordinary jobs, most of which go home as ordinary jobs. Whether yours does is decided before the parcel even arrives: did somebody reach for the power, and how many days sat between the damage and the postbox. Nothing on the bench fixes either.

Answers before you spend anything.

Will a drive that got wet still read?

Most of the time, yes. A circuit board is what water finishes, and boards are stock parts. Where it hardly ever gets is inside the chamber holding the platters. Two things decide the job: that the power button went untouched while the drive was damp, and that it reached us quickly.

Is rice any use at all?

No, and it brings two fresh problems along with it. Fine grit and starch dust come off rice, and both work into the contacts. Meanwhile every day in the bowl is another day of corrosion, with the moisture that is doing the damage sealed away where no grain will ever reach it.

Is a drive that has been in a fire worth sending?

Often, yes. Platters are held in an alloy body, and cooked electronics are only parts to be swapped. What makes one of these awkward is a casing that has distorted, or soot that got past the breather filter. Send it just as you found it: sealed up, not cleaned, and with nobody having tried the power.

Should the drive be dried before posting?

No, and yes, that runs against instinct. Everything the water was carrying is left behind as it evaporates, baked hard onto the contacts and into the seams of the casing. Bag it wet. It ought still to be wet when the bag is opened on the bench here.

Switched off, a drive cannot get any worse.

The look costs nothing. What comes back to you is a file list — what opened, what did not — plus one figure to finish the job, in writing, before anything chargeable begins. Most jobs carry no fee at all unless the data comes back. Leave the drive switched off until you have that list.
