What mends, what is only patched, and what is done for.

Electronics: this really is a repairWhere a drive shows no sign of life at all, the board has generally gone — a TVS diode shorted, electronics finished, a bridge chip on a USB drive that no longer answers. Each of those is a repair in the plain sense of that word, and they make for the cheapest news anybody here gets to give.
Firmware: mendable with the right kitDamage one module in the service area, or corrupt the translator, and a mechanically perfect disk will announce itself as 0GB, or vanish off the bus entirely. Reaching structures at that level takes purpose-built hardware. Nothing you can download gets close.
Mechanics: a single sweep and no moreA seized spindle freed, a donor stack fitted, heads lifted off a surface they had settled onto: what each of those buys is exactly the working life one complete copy requires, and not an hour beyond it. Outliving the job it was woken for is not what the mechanism is for.
Swapping the board stopped working long agoMeasurement happens once, on the production line, and the resulting figures end up in a ROM soldered onto whichever board shipped with that mechanism. Put a board off another drive on and the heads hand back noise instead of data. Your own ROM has to make the journey, and that needs a soldering iron and a programmer.

Your ROM goes onto a rebuilt board. Damaged service-area modules get corrected one at a time. Where an original mechanical part has given out, a donor part takes its place. Each of those steps exists for a single end: one pass over the surfaces, start to finish, without a break.

Anything lifted off is verified, listed, and written onto media bought in new for your job. Holding it was all the drive was ever doing. If light duty is left in the thing, you will be told so; if the mechanism is done for, you will be told that.

The file list reaches you before any invoice does. Say yes and it is billed; say no and it is not — and on most jobs, if nothing comes back there is nothing to pay. What comes in most often

  • Hardly anybody actually wants a repair — the contents are what people want, not a disk that turns. We work to the outcome rather than to whichever word came out on the telephone, and which of the two your own drive is a candidate for is something you get told.
  • The swap nobody mentions at the counter — where a laptop returns from a cheap repair running beautifully, it has usually been fitted with a blank disk. Ask where the original went — and put the question before the bill gets paid.
  • Electrical damage is the cheap end — a spike finishes the board without ever touching the recording surfaces, so these are the quickest jobs here and the cheapest to put a figure on.
  • Donor heads buy you one read, not reliability — a fitted stack is good for one clean pass, full stop. Anybody selling that back to you as a serviceable drive has already booked your next failure.

Set down here, and stuck to: electronics come back and firmware comes back, both of them ordinary repairs. Mechanical parts stay alive for one copy and no longer. Where the coating on a platter has been scored through, nothing returns — not here and not anywhere, whatever the advertising claims. What helps, and what does damage.

  • Get it in writing that the original disk is returned
  • Send the caddy, any loose board, every small part

Answers before you spend anything.

Is a failed hard drive genuinely repairable?

Partly, yes. Electronics come back, and firmware comes back with them: a rebuilt PCB carrying the ROM off your own board, plus a service area put right module by module. Anything mechanical is a different proposition. A donor head stack goes in for one purpose only, which is staying alive long enough to read the platters once, and it is retired when that read ends. The data travels home to you. The drive itself stays here.

Repair or recovery — which is it I actually need?

Hardware you can carry on using is what a repair leaves you holding. What recovery leaves you is the files, the hardware being written off. Of a drive that has genuinely failed, only one of those answers is honest; the other is why a laptop can return from a cheap fix, running beautifully, with not a scrap of its owner's work on it. Nothing was mended there. A disk was swapped.

Would a replacement circuit board fix it?

Seldom, and never by itself. A board's ROM stores adaptive values measured against one mechanism and against nothing else. Move that chip over and the drive begins answering sensibly; leave a donor board exactly as it came and what the heads hand you is noise. Moving it means desoldering, which means a bench equipped for the job.

New disks are cheap. Why does this cost £300?

Because a disk is not what the money buys. £300 + VAT covers getting the contents of the drive that stopped back to you on media that works: a single figure, put in writing once the free diagnosis is finished, with no fee on most jobs if nothing is recovered. Money spent instead on coaxing a failed mechanism along leaves you owning a component you would never dare rely on.

Switched off, a drive cannot get any worse.

The look costs nothing. What comes back to you is a file list — what opened, what did not — plus one figure to finish the job, in writing, before anything chargeable begins. Most jobs carry no fee at all unless the data comes back. Leave the drive switched off until you have that list.
