The lab · how to reach us

Talk to the bench, or set it out below.

Two things are worth telling us: what the device is doing at the moment, and what was stored on it. An engineer replies inside one working day, usually a good deal sooner. Prefer talking to typing? The phone rings at the bench — there is no call centre, and nobody is placed between you and whoever does the work.

Ask an engineer, and the first look is free

Tell us what has gone wrong.

Free to look, a fixed price written down, and no deposit on an ordinary job. Send something through and it is on the support desk that day, with an answer inside one working day. Open weekdays, 9am–5:30pm.

Pack it so nothing shiftsSend the disk rather than the computer — extract it from the laptop, tower, Mac or CCTV recorder before you pack anything. Two things are exceptions: an external can travel inside its own enclosure, and a NAS can be sent whole. A RAID set or a server goes the opposite way about, as bare disks, each numbered for the bay it came out of. Pack it so nothing can move about in transit.
Put a value on the data, not the hardwareKeep the Post Office receipt, and insure it for the value of the files, not the price of the hardware. Once a parcel is inside the postal network nobody can watch it on your behalf. Phones and tablets are not handled.
Enclose the printed formSlip a printed copy into the box; the drive is then logged the minute the parcel is opened — print the shipping form here (PDF). Postage home is at our cost.

The paperwork, published in full.

The same published paperwork covers every job — Terms & Conditions (PDF) · Privacy policy. Your contract sits with Easy Data Recovery Ltd — company NI625698, a Northern Ireland registration, ICO ZC173784 — which trades on this site as Nottingham Data Recovery.

What people ask before anything else.

Where should the parcel be sent?

One name goes on the label: Manchester Data Recovery. Beneath it, Peter House, Oxford Street, Manchester, M1 5AN. Reception knows the building by that name and nothing else, so a parcel addressed to Nottingham Data Recovery can be handed back at reception. Post it tracked and insured. However the job turns out, your drive is on a bench the day it arrives, and the return journey is paid for by us.

Can I drop it off in person?

You can, although the post is far less trouble for most people. Nottingham has no counter. Anything handed over in person goes in at the intake lab — Peter House, Oxford Street, M1 5AN — on a weekday between 9am and 5:30pm. Ring ahead and the paperwork will be ready for you.

Is an email enough on its own?

The form beats an email address: it arrives at the support desk carrying enough detail for a case to be opened there and then. If you would rather talk, 0115 8220606 reaches a staffed desk on weekdays, 9am to 5:30pm.

What should go in the box with it?

Three items. The drive itself; the shipping form, printed and filled in; and whatever has parted company with the drive — a screw, a lead. If the volume is encrypted, its password or recovery key belongs on that form. Unless an engineer asks for it, the mains adaptor stays where it is.

No chargeable work begins until you agree.

The look costs nothing. Before any chargeable work starts, one figure arrives in writing. And the drive gets handled as what it generally proves to be: the only copy left anywhere.
