Four notes that belong with it.
- The figures above do not include VAT; the standard UK rate is added to every one.
- Treat them as opening figures, not bills. How much you ultimately pay will depend upon what type of problem was found; you will have this amount in writing by the end of your free diagnosis, prior to spending any money.
- In most cases you only pay if we recover your data. On those jobs there is no charge for a failed attempt.
- Half up front on three job types: forensic instructions, recorders and repairs using donor components as replacement parts. Regardless of whether the data comes back or not, each will take many hours and parts. Once the recovered data is returned to you, then you can settle your remaining charges.

What the £49 advertisements are actually selling
- £49 pays for a diagnosis, never for a recovery: what you buy is a place in a queue and someone's eyes on your drive. The recovery price comes later, and by that point the drive is on their bench and asking for it back has become awkward. This same stage costs nothing here, and if you decline the quote, we return the drive to you at our expense.
- Ask what failure costs: if no document promises that a failed job is free of charge, nobody has much reason to give you bad news promptly.
- Ask whether the quote can change: this one doesn't. Any issues we encounter once you agree to proceed will be absorbed by us, and the final bill will reflect exactly what was originally quoted.
- Ask who will actually open it: many businesses apply a markup and then send the drive off to another company. Our engineers take the drive out of the box and do all the work themselves, so there's no third party involved.
When a table stops being helpful: the figures are meant to be taken literally. No worse than a logical fault on one hard disk and the job is £300 + VAT, a price, not an estimate, with nothing added afterwards. Mechanical failure is the one thing no table can predict, because there is no way to know in advance how many donor components will need to be matched to a particular drive. Settling that is exactly what the free diagnosis is for, which is why your figure is on paper before any work starts.

What will it cost me?
Your band is determined by two factors: how many disks are in it, and what kind of device it is. All flash devices (memory cards, pen drives), regardless of brand or model, cost £250 + VAT. If there is only one disk involved (whether it's spinning or solid-state), removed from an iMac or laptop and sent to us on its own, the cost is £300 + VAT. If you're unsure about whether your drive is removable, call us first. Recorders cost £400 + VAT. If you add a second disk (for example a four-bay NAS, a rack server, a RAID set) your cost will begin at £500 + VAT. Forensic instructions, as well as virtual machine datastores, start at £800 + VAT. The table above presents all of this in fewer words, and the free diagnosis turns your band into just one number on paper.
Does the first look cost anything?
No, and saying "no" to a quote also doesn't incur any charges. The only thing you'll need to cover is the cost of posting your drive to us. Any cost of returning your drive to you goes on our invoice, not yours.
Is any money wanted before you start?
You pay half of the total cost at the beginning for three different jobs: a repair needing donor parts that have to be sourced and matched, a recorder where the disk is built into the case itself, and any forensic instruction. In each instance it is because the time and parts are being used whether or not your data is recovered. The remainder of the balance is invoiced when your data is handed over. Every other job here works differently: in most cases you only pay if we recover your data.
When is the invoice settled?
At a point between two stages. First, you look through the list of items retrieved from your original drive and confirm they are correct; only then do we post your new media to you. This sequence is explicitly stated in our terms. For an ordinary job, you don't pay a penny when the drive arrives or during the bench work.
Will anything be added to the bill?
No additional costs. The diagnosis is free, and we also cover the return postage of the drive. The amount you agreed is the amount you are billed. The only optional extra is a priority handling charge, when you request it; we always quote this charge first.
Somebody else has quoted less. What now?
Three easy questions can answer this. Once the drive is opened, is the quoted price still valid? If no data is recovered, do I have to pay anything? Whose bench does the actual work on my drive? Our answers: yes. In most cases you only pay if we recover your data. And no one but us ever works on your drive.
