There Was Never Anything Wrong With the Disk.
A Mansfield conveyancer wound her practice down. Her scanned client files, all of them, went onto an Iomega drive bought about twelve months before. Power still reaches it. The lamp lights and I can hear it spinning

What went wrong, and why.
That plastic box holds two products with wildly different working lives. Behind sits a plain SATA disk, indistinguishable from the one in any desktop tower. In front is a small board turning SATA into USB, built to the lowest cost the market will bear and cooled by whatever air drifts past. Which means a unit that takes power, hums and shows up nowhere sets the suspects in a fixed order: bridge, then firmware, then the mechanism. Bottom of that list is a broken platter. Diagnosis exists to test a frightening explanation, not to nod along with it.

What happened on the bench.
Four screws out, and the disk onto a port
Four screws came out. The Seagate Barracuda from inside went onto a bench SATA port. Her theory survived about thirty seconds. It spun up. Model string in full, proper capacity declared, vendor commands taken without a pause. The noise that had worried her was a healthy drive resonating in thin plastic.
Check the logs first, then ring her
A drive that looks well can still be on its way out quietly, so nobody rang her back until two numbers had come off the disk itself: the reallocated sector count, and the grown defect list. Neither held any surprise on a disk of that age that had never been worked hard. Samples read in every zone came back at the first attempt, and not a single retry was logged.
A full-rate image, and then a culprit
At the drive's rated speed the image came off clean, first sector through to last: nothing coaxed, no retries, no fresh defects. Which left a single component to answer for it. Age had finished the bridge board, while the disk behind it carried on working.
What was returned.
Scans from every trading year of the practice were opened, and not one was short of anything. New media took the recovery back to her. Her old Seagate sits in a better enclosure now, doing light duty as a second copy, and a broken platter has not been mentioned since.
