The Lamp Was On and Nothing Was Moving.
Three winters of scanning, and one knock undid it. A retired joiner in Mansfield had been working a spool of cine film an evening, and emptying the slide trays alongside, all of it going to the same drive — until the evening it fell over sideways with a copy going

What went wrong, and why.
That lamp connects to the power rail and to nothing whatever besides. It confirms volts reached the enclosure, and the LED has no knowledge at all of the disk sitting behind it. Where nothing spins up at all, the candidates number three: heads down on recorded surface and stuck there; a seized bearing; or electronics that never give the order to start. On a bench supply each of the three draws a distinct shape, so telling them apart is a couple of minutes' work. He had a replacement cable ready at his end, and it would have changed nothing.

What happened on the bench.
Put a meter on it before anything else
Off came the USB lead, on went a metered supply, and that shows you what no laptop is able to. Draw climbed steeply as the motor took hold, then flattened out against whatever had hold of the pack; run it a second time and back came the identical shape. A board with nothing left in it draws low, and flat, and stays that way; this trace did neither. One curve was enough to place the fault.
Get the heads off the data
In clean air the mechanics confirmed the meter. Going over mid-write meant the actuator received nothing resembling a park instruction, so both heads had settled on recorded surface, gripping the pack where rotation had ended. They were lifted off one at a time, and the band of platter beneath each was examined under a stereo microscope before anything else happened — a head left lying there works its way down into the data.
One spin-up, and take the lot
Clear of the surfaces, the motor took hold at once and the drive gave a proper account of its identity. One unbroken run then took every surface, with nothing opened on the way through and nothing browsed. Anything that has stuck once is capable of sticking again, and it does not announce itself beforehand.
What was returned.
All of it came back — the reels, the slide trays, every file checked onto fresh media before the parcel was sealed. There was no mark anywhere on the platters, which is the reward for leaving a drive alone instead of plugging it in over and over. He scrapped the S3. Three copies of the films are in existence now, and one of those lives at his sister's.
