What went wrong, and why.
Power reaches storage at the end of the chain, not on the way along it. So a machine refusing two chargers is describing its charging circuit, and describing nothing whatever about the disk bolted inside it — a disk which has merely been given no electricity. He had reasoned that out for himself and saved a repair bill by acting on it. One question was genuinely open: what thirteen years of daily running had done to the mechanism. Wear is measurable rather than debatable, so we measured it before telling him anything, and charged nothing for doing so.

What happened on the bench.
An old disk gets no benefit of the doubt
There was no USB caddy in this job anywhere. Everything was asked at firmware level, where a drive has no room to flatter itself. SMART log first, then the reallocation counters, then the grown defect list, and last a set of test reads that began at the outer tracks and worked inwards. Answers came back thoroughly dull — a few remapped sectors, timings that did not waver, and mechanics in rather better order than the man who posted it had feared.
Healthy media is treated no differently
Whatever state a disk is in, the handling is identical. On a drive as sound as this one the write blocker costs nothing measurable in time, and it answers in advance whatever anybody may ask later: what went home was what arrived, and there is a log to say so.
The copy is where the rest of the work happens
HFS+ opened out of the image in UFS Explorer at the first attempt — folder tree, file names and dates just as he had described them over the telephone. Nobody touched the MacBook again; there was nothing in it left to touch.
What was returned.
He had the portfolio and the placement evidence a fortnight before his deadline. Charging circuits are another trade's work and we told him as much. The Toshiba is now tested, its condition recorded, and its remaining job is to hold a second copy of things. None of the pricing was a surprise: one drive, published at £300 + VAT.
