The whole of this business is one person in a unit off M1 junction 23 at Loughborough, and every order it has ever taken sits on a single Iomega. Waking the drive had meant a nudge over towards the left
on the barrel plug for six weeks, a habit so old he had stopped seeing it. Monday brought stone cold, no light, nothing at all

What went wrong, and why.
Yes. What he had were two electrical faults working on one another. Contact at a single angle means a barrel plug that arcs whenever it moves, while an adapter worn out at the end of its working life supplies dips and spikes in place of twelve steady volts. Both arrive at the drive's own board, and absorbing exactly that is what a board is for. Its protection diode holds out as long as it can, then shorts, and the rail drops to earth. That finishes the board. On the far side the discs know nothing whatever about any of it, which is why this category of job so often returns whole — and why establishing which category you are in is free.

What happened on the bench.
Put the adapter under load as well
Both parts were tested that way. Draw anything from the adapter and its output wandered, then rose past its rating, which is what he had suspected all along. Its twelve-volt rail measured short to earth, and next to it lay the small sharp-edged mark an over-voltage leaves behind. Ordinary wear produces nothing that looks like that.
Fresh parts, the original ROM
Failed parts came off and new parts went on, and the ROM was never touched. That chip carries the calibration figures for this mechanism, they exist nowhere else, and a board without them cannot interpret what the heads hand up to it. Leave it in place and the swap works; take it out and the swap produces noise.
Twelve steady volts, then one pass
Six weeks of poor power might as well not have happened, once a properly regulated supply was on it. Defect tables came back at the first asking and the image ran at a level rate the whole way. This is how electrical jobs generally behave: the damage stops at the electronics.
What was returned.
Nothing at all was missing, and he satisfied himself of it. He picked a year, listed its orders and totalled them, then did the same for the year before, and the figures agreed for every year he tried. Out went the adapter. He has the answer in writing. A single drive carries a published price of £300 + VAT, and that was settled before one component was replaced.
