The Socket Was Never Where That Noise Came From.

Everybody in that workshop knew the routine, because for two years a wedge of card had sat under the plug: shove it in, then hold it over to the left. Two years, and no one looked past it. Then came a noise from the Backup Plus that nobody there recognised — light still on, one flat note running and running — and no machine in the unit at Melton Mowbray would list the drive at all. A workshop up the road offered him a new socket. He rang us instead.

What went wrong, and why.

Getting this one wrong is easy. Watch a single thing go wrong in a single place for two years and everybody keeps their eyes on that place. Worn sockets cause genuine trouble of their own — transfers that stop half done, a drive that vanishes off the desktop and reappears, files with holes in the middle. Getting inside a sealed body to grip a spindle is not on that list. Bad contact takes signal away from you and does nothing besides; no force whatever passes into the mechanics. A tone that keeps on sounding until the power comes out means the motor is straining at something solid; on a portable drive that usually means heads resting on the platters and holding. The fault had crossed the lid, in other words, and left the plug behind — and fitting a new socket would have repaired a half of it that had stopped mattering.

Telling the two faults apart

A current-limited bench supply gave the answer in about two minutes. Current rose, and kept rising as the motor leaned on something immovable, until the supply cut itself off. Then nothing. A seizure, with no room left to argue. He had described the plug entirely accurately, and it made no difference: the case had to come off whatever the answer was, and that ended the socket's part in this.

Stack out, casing put aside

Clean air, lid off, and the heads sat where that tone had promised: on the disc surface, well short of the ramp they should have parked on. Inspection meant taking the stack off, and the band of platter underneath turned out to be unmarked. After that the drive was worked from an ordinary SATA port, so two years of packed-out cable stopped being relevant, and no iron was taken to the socket at all.

One pass, on a connection that stays up

Free to turn again, the drive gave up the entire disk overnight — one run, first sector to last. No reset, no dropping off the bus, and none of the appearing and disappearing the workshop had put up with for years. Very probably the best read the thing had ever managed, and definitely the last.

What was returned.

Ten years of work went back, and every item of it was set against the job book — parts invoices, scanned handbooks, and the progress photographs from each restoration. A second copy sits at his daughter's house now and gets compared against the working one. The card went in the bin. Pricing was the published single-drive band of £300 + VAT, quoted in writing before anything began.

Short version: A long-standing fault will always be blamed for a brand new one. The day the noise changes is what counts: pull the power then, and keep it pulled. Post the drive afterwards. The diagnosis is free, and no work begins until you have a price in writing.
