The Memory Was Sound. Nothing Would See It.

It had been freezing for a month before that: it seizes up for a minute, then goes on as though nothing had happened. Four weeks of working around a Dell Latitude that did that is what a research analyst in Nottingham had been doing. Tuesday ended it — Boot Device Not Found, and after that nothing. She put the SSD into her partner's machine, then into a caddy, and got the same result twice: it turned up in neither. Her employer's IT people offered a rebuild and left it at that, which was no help to an MA being written up part-time, nor to the interview recordings sitting underneath it.

What went wrong, and why.

There is a small processor inside every SSD and it has two duties. One is to present the disk to whichever host asks. The other is to maintain a table recording which piece of flash a given logical block occupies at this moment. Call it the controller, and note that it generally gives out well before the memory it manages does. Those minute-long freezes were that table coming apart beneath her, with no sign of it on screen. Her own reasoning got most of the way there before anything was posted: when no host at all will list a disk, the connector is not where the trouble is, and an SSD offers few candidates behind it. Beyond that point none of this resembles a disc job. There is no motor, no head and no mechanism, and the SATA connector ceases to matter.

Worn-out memory, or a silent controller?

Nothing on the bench presented it to a host port either. All the work after that happened at controller level, and every attempt to bring the disk up ended at one step: the translation tables would not load, and until they do a disk cannot introduce itself to anything. The wear counters, though, were the encouraging part of the day — there was plenty of life in the memory.

Into the mode the factory uses

What this controller wanted was technological mode. No ordinary computer ever asks for it; it is a factory condition, reached through vendor-specific commands. Inside it the chip will surrender its raw contents, and outside it the chip surrenders none. Everything hangs on that step: fail it and there is no job, clear it and the files are practically home.

Reordering the pages comes before looking for any file

By design, a raw dump is scrambled. Each new fragment of a file lands wherever wear levelling has space for it at that instant, which means the mapping must be reconstructed from scratch before any document reads as a document. Once it was, NTFS mounted without complaint: folders back where they belonged, and every chapter under the name she uses for it.

What was returned.

New media took the dissertation home, along with the interview audio and the reference library. The Latitude had never been at fault. She has a replacement SSD in it that has behaved since, and says that anything finished will now live in three separate places. That we intend to check. Pricing was the single-drive band we publish, £300 + VAT, agreed in writing before work started.

Short version: A disk that no computer at all will list has narrowed the fault down for you already. Trying another machine is free diagnosis; so is our first look at it. The figure comes afterwards, in writing.
