Fifteen Years of Teaching, and Not One Light.
Coursework moderation was outstanding, half term had started, and in a Grantham house a pocket drive carried fifteen years of design and technology teaching: every scheme of work, the CAD files and video of everything my classes ever made

What went wrong, and why.
Three components can each produce that silence, and with the case still shut you cannot tell which of them you have. One is the little board that turns USB into the SATA connector on the disk. Another is firmware, which lives on the platters themselves rather than in a chip. The third is the mechanism, turning or seized. Between them the cost of a repair varies enormously. Leads and ports had already gone, so the next move was to open the shell and stand the disk bare on bench power — starting with the commonest of the three, which happens to be the cheapest as well.

What happened on the bench.
Case open, and the disk onto a bench port
Out of the case and onto a bench port, the disk answered inside a minute. Spindle at speed. Model string correct. Service commands acknowledged in turn. Responsibility for the silence lay wholly with the bridge board, the only thing letting a SATA disk speak USB — so its failure removes every outward sign at once, no light, no handshake, nothing.
Copy it by a route that is still working
Once the failed board was out of the path, the disk behaved like something nothing had ever happened to. Rated throughput end to end. A log without a read error anywhere in it. The factory defect list sitting exactly where firmware goes looking for it. On a bench that is the signature of a bridge fault, and this one showed it from first sector to last.
Return it on a disk that works
The tree arrived on the new disk built exactly as she built it. Under Schemes of Work, Year 9 is where she left it. Her moderation folders are where she looks. No renaming happened, and nothing was tipped out into a single flat directory. What changed is the box the work lives in and nothing else.
What was returned.
So fifteen years went back whole, in her own filing order, checked before the parcel was taped up. The component that failed had never once held her work, and a replacement costs a few pounds.
