Fifteen Minutes, and Then Nothing at All.
Insulating a loft in Skegness brought years of boxes down through the hatch, and one box held the Iomega, tangled up with a lot of old leads. It gave her fifteen minutes. Up came the volume and out came the folders, and two or three of Grandad's scanned slides
opened before it vanished from the desktop in the middle of a double-click. Every machine said the same thing afterwards. Corrupted and unreadable

What went wrong, and why.
Windows saying 'corrupted' means only that what came back was wrong. That is a symptom and not a diagnosis. The useful clue was in the timing, because it gave up part of the way into a read. That is what a tired mechanism does. Magnetism fading off a platter does not. Standing still for years does machinery no good: oil migrates, bearings settle wherever they were left, sliders go dull. Put a mechanism in that condition on one long uninterrupted read and you have played the worst opening move on the board.

What happened on the bench.
No more USB, and no more experiments
Another USB port was never on the cards. Bench power only, and the firmware was questioned ahead of everything else, since what firmware says settles the order of the rest. The grown defect list ran long already, with the spare sectors close to used up. One measured sweep of the whole surface, then, and nobody browsing folders first to see what might be in there.
Settings kept low, for a mechanism idle for years
Instructions to the imager were to take its time: rate down, timeouts generous, and a pause at the end of each zone so that nothing had a chance to get warm. Most of the surface came off quietly at those settings, and nearly all of the errors logged came from one head, inside a single narrow band.
Mend the corruption on the copy, and never on the original
Seen from the image, that alarming word came to very little. Part of the filesystem's own bookkeeping had come off the weak head and part had not. A good deal of that bookkeeping exists twice over in NTFS, and the second copies covered the gaps, so folders came back correctly named and correctly dated. Permanently, the head kept back a small number of scans.
What was returned.
The research, the old shop accounts, the slides: each item was opened and checked in turn. Nine of the scans are incomplete. Every one of the nine is listed in the report by filename, and nothing whatever was glossed over. The Iomega is not going back into a loft. Two drives carry the archive now, and neither of them sits idle.
