Plug It In, and the Whole Machine Stops.

It had become routine in Lincoln. The Seagate goes in and the PC freezes solid with all its lights still on, and stops that way until you pull the lead. Folder windows would set half drawn on the screen, and the moment that lead came out the machine behaved perfectly. On the disk were eight years of interviews belonging to a community radio station, and a whole Sunday had gone on moving one folder off it before the drive stopped altogether. That much answered the question he cared about: they are on there, it just will not give them to me.

What went wrong, and why.

There was never anything wrong with the PC. Storage requests get served in turn, and this disk had installed itself at the head of that queue. Where a drive stops replying, Windows waits out one timeout, puts the request again, waits out a second, and every job behind it waits with it. Which is how a spreadsheet with no connection whatever to the Seagate came to freeze along with the rest. That folder he did manage to shift on the Sunday answered the biggest question of all — the filing was intact and the recordings genuinely were on there. Nothing had been wiped. What the disk no longer had was any means of giving it up.

Stop using up what is left

Those counters had settled the matter before anything else was tried. Reallocation was a long way down the road, and the pending list lengthened every time the disk was asked again. Sunday's folder had therefore been borrowed rather than recovered, out of a mechanism working well past what it had left. The single useful thing to do from there was to cut its power.

No part of the disk is allowed to hold the copy up

Settings came first: timeouts shortened, two attempts to an address, and anything still refusing logged so the run could carry on. Sound areas came off at full speed. Awkward addresses were kept for a final pass and worked one head at a time in short sittings, which is the pace a tired mechanism can still manage, and the reason none of the rest of the archive was put at risk.

Then listen to every minute of it

No file count signs a job like this off, because a file of precisely the right size can still contain a stretch of silence the platter never gave back. So every interview was played. The image mounted first time; up came eight years of recordings in the order the station had made them; and each one ran beginning to end before the case was closed.

What was returned.

Every folder crossed over, the half-copied one included, and all of it passed the listening test. The archive travelled home on new media. A second set of it went to the station's archivist. That Seagate is out of service. Nothing has troubled the PC since it went.

Short version: A machine that hangs only while one particular drive is plugged in has already been told which drive is at fault. Take one careful copy, then leave it switched off. Nothing is charged for the look, and £300 + VAT on a single drive is agreed in writing first.
