It Mounts in a Second and Shows You an Empty Window.

The Elements spent its life in a cupboard in Mansfield, out once a month to copy the family machine: camcorder tapes we had put on the computer, school photographs, every document this house owns. It spun up that Sunday exactly as always and mounted inside a second or two. What it then showed them was an empty window, with twenty years of things behind it somewhere. Before anyone thought to ring us, chkdsk had already been run over it by somebody in the house.

What went wrong, and why.

An NTFS volume keeps its names in one place and its contents in another. The master file table holds the names; the files themselves lie scattered over the platters at the addresses they were written to. Break the table and the listing goes empty while not a single byte of any file has moved. Plenty of ordinary things break it: a write nobody let finish, a partition entry a few sectors adrift, an unlucky cluster of weak sectors in precisely the wrong place. It follows that a drive which mounts instantly and then displays nothing has usually failed at its bookkeeping rather than in its mechanics. Two things had to be established before any figure could go out: whether the disk was safe to read, and how much chkdsk had changed.

Clear the hardware first, then argue about NTFS

A short set of firmware questions came before anything substantial was read: SMART history, the remapped sector count, and the two defect lists, primary and grown. All of it came back clean, which matters to the price as much as to the method — a mechanism in that condition can be imaged at full rate instead of being coaxed along on salvage settings.

Take the image first; every repair happens on the copy

Point a repair tool at a volume and it alters the volume, and one had been pointed at this one already. The original was therefore read once and then set aside for good, with every later step run against the image. Looked at that way, the damage turned out to occupy one unbroken band — and NTFS keeps a mirror of its first and most important records, which had survived nearly intact.

Put the nameless files into an order a family can use

Any entry chkdsk had removed outright left its file to identify itself. Signatures for JPEG, MP4, PDF and Office documents were read straight from the clusters; what came out that way was grouped by format first, then ordered on the date written inside each file. That leaves a household an evening of work, not several thousand items with numbers for names.

What was returned.

Nothing at all was absent — scanned documents, school photographs, and the tapes transferred years ago. Most of it kept the name and the folder it had always had; the remainder arrived grouped by format and by date. A new drive carried it home, along with one suggestion: do not keep your only copy beside the machine it copies. The work fell inside the published band of £300 + VAT, quoted in writing before it started.

Short version: A drive left in a cupboard for twenty years is a hope, not a backup. Plug yours in once a year and look. Should the window ever be empty when you do, take an image before you take the listing seriously, and let us see it first. There is no charge for looking. A written figure follows it. And on most jobs no fee falls due at all where the data does not come back.
