Twelve Months of Slowing, Then Two Clicks.
Ten years of two children's lives were on the Toshiba. A Beeston household spent the best part of a year blaming the USB port, since the one symptom anybody could describe was a drive getting a bit slower every month that goes by

from Windows, which let the port off. A neighbour's machine settled it as well: it never appeared on his laptop either

What went wrong, and why.
Before any drive can introduce itself, it has to lift its own calibration and adaptive tables off a reserved band of the platters. Heads this thin were no longer able to. Everything after that is deliberate, not broken: two goes at the band are permitted, with a recalibration between them, and if neither works the firmware cuts the power instead of trusting numbers it cannot verify. Those two goes are what you hear. The slow year was that wear accumulating out of sight, and Windows only supplied a phrase for what the disk had been saying for months.

What happened on the bench.
The noise was evidence in its own right
Two clicks, never three, and then the power cut. That is not a rhythm ordinary use produces; the power-on read produces it, which put the reserved tracks top of the list. Magnification agreed. There was no chipping and nothing that spoke of a fall — only even wear right along the sliders, after a very high number of powered hours.
The heads had to be dealt with before anything else
In went a stack from the same production run. The drive then finished its start-up sequence, kept power and gave out its own model string. Rather than leave surface mapping to the end, we did it immediately: wear as gradual as this is seldom even across a disk, and a map is the only thing that shows which regions still carry anything worth having.
Image at once, and let the sound heads run first
A mechanism worn this far will not hold still while somebody tries again, so imaging began the instant that repair was complete, and the bench kept the drive until the copy was finished. Full rate on the healthy heads first. Anything doubtful got marked and waited for slow passes, once everything else was already safe. Once the reserved area could be read again, the bulk came off without argument.
What was returned.
A complete image came out at the end of it. Extraction ran off the copy rather than the disk, and every folder was gone through a year at a time before sign-off. Fresh media took ten years of childhood photographs home. As for the Toshiba, it was scrapped; a drive that has worn out its own heads holds nothing worth saving.
